Bellator Did It Again Last Night

Props to anybody who stayed up last night to watch Bellator - I didn't. The guys in Bellator don't seem to mind a little interweb piracy so here are the fights from last night. I don't want to spoil anything but the fights are sick and if you have twenty minutes this morning you should seriously get these into you.

First up the 145lb Championship bout between FightIreland favourite Marlon Sandro and Pat Curran.

Next and this is as great Seth Petruzelli vs. Ricco Rodriguez.

Rashad may miss another title shot!

Rashad is quickly becoming "that guy" - you know the one who organises everything but then never shows up. The one who says "lets get shit-faced" then leaves at eleven to catch up on CSI. God-dammit Rashad - will you stop screwing up your title shot.

This time round it's the broken hand excuse :-p

Brock Lesnar is back!!!

He's back and he has a gun and he's shootin' dogs! F*ck Yeah!

Chael Sonnen at it again!

Chael Sonnen has served his time for steroid abuse and is now free to compete as a mixed martial artists once again. However we reckon Chael is on some serious gear to come out with some of things he does. In this video he discuss how 205 is the easiest weight class in MMA, how he has placed Team Black House under Citzens' Arrest and how he cannot wait to go to Brazil :-p Check it out.

UFC Bigger Than Soccer in Brazil? Maybe...

UFC light heavyweight Vitor Belfort was pretty happy with his win last saturday night at UFC 133. The Brazilian earned another first round knock out victory - the 14th of his career, when he finished Japanese Judoka (part-time pop star) Yoshihiro Akiyama following a barrage of punches. Belfort was in fine fettle after the event and eagerly told the press that not only was he back but that the UFC was on the way to becoming bigger than soccer in his homeland. Belfort told reporters “The message I have for Brazil is, ‘Get ready! The UFC is coming and these days its like the World Cup in Brazil: the people love it. It’s the second time the event goes there and television made way. It may seem like madness what I’m going to say, but in three years the UFC will surpass soccer.”

Before you laugh - get this, Belfort became a UFC Champion at 19 years of age or 14 years ago. Belfort turned his back on a professional boxing career choosing MMA over the squared circle. Now we all know the fortunes of professional boxing versus the rise of MMA in the past decade. Perhaps the father of three who is a devotely religious man knows something we don't know or perhaps he makes things happen.

In a rather bizarre twist - former teammate Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva released this video via the UFC. Which shows the giant heavyweight juggling a ball inside an Octagon - this may be the crossover we were looking for.

Matt Hamill Retires....More than a fighter...

Mixed emotions tonight as Matt Hamill has announced on his own website that he has hung up his gloves after 6 years in the UFC and 13 fights - Hamill who went 9-4 and faced some of the top names in the light-heavyweight division is walking away from the sport before the sport takes too much out of the fighter. A true warrior - Matt "The Hammer" Hamill will always be an inspiration to those you challenge adversity and overcome life's obstacles. Enjoy your retirement Matt.

Full Statement from his site below:

Today is a sad day for me. After six years and 13 fights in the UFC I’m ready to hang up my gloves and retire from this amazing sport.
The UFC has been extremely good to me and given me an opportunity to make a great living. That exposure has allowed me options outside the Octagon as well. I just don’t have it in me to fight anymore and my last two performances have shown that.
I was ready to make this decision after UFC 130 but my friends, family coaches and most importantly my daughter encouraged me to give it one last chance. My career has been plagued by injuries starting with The Ultimate Fighter and disrupted my training ever since.
There hasn’t been even one training camp where I’ve been able to train without training around an injury. I have not been kind to my body and it has nothing left after 28 years of non stop competition. It’s time to finally give it a rest.
I can’t continue to fight without having the hunger and desire to do so. I can’t let my performances reflect on my coaches who are the best in the world and the reason I’ve made it this far.
I have fallen in love with the sport of Mixed Martial Arts and I will continue to coach at our gym Mohawk Valley MMA along side my teammates and help the next generation of fighters make it to the UFC. I also look forward to continuing my business ventures outside the UFC including “Hamill” the movie based on my life story set to be released this fall.

Make Money Watching UFC 133

I see George Washington, a banana, Home and Dana... need to stop drinking  at breakfast...

After the spectacular failure that was our picks for Dream: Fight for Japan we knew we had to take action. After some comprehensive investigation we found that we had a faulty calculator (forgot to carry the one) and we were relying too strongly on our brains when picking fights. So we are pleased to announce our new betting guide - we  have disregarded any quantitative sophistication and are solely relying on hearts, guts and glory.

The Safety Bet: A €50 accumulator on - Belfort, Mendes, Brown and Menjivar wins you €150.

The Young Guns: €40 on - Evans, MacDonald and Gustaffson wins you €100.

The Oh Know He Didn't: - €100 on Tito - wins you €400.

If Tito wins you'll be sick you didn't!

Bernard Hopkins toed the MMA Line at last

When I heard about this interview I instantly thought that B-Hop was under the influence of some sort of Jedi ZUFFA mind-trick but nope by all accounts he is toe-ing the MMA line. It's a strange one as "The Executioner" was quite vocal in his disdain towards MMA and although he never went as far as Mayorga or Toney with his trash-talking he did say; that he did not rate MMA or it's fighters - so it is very odd to have him at the UFC 133 open workouts yesterday hitting the pads for the man. GSP has already worked out several times at The Wild Card preparing for fights and Overeem and Diaz constantly talk about the squared circle - them lines they are a blurring folks.

World ranked K-1 fighter Tyrone Spong was also there - check out his video after the jump.

A Day in the Life of Greg Jackson

We have been guilty in the past of some interweb hyperbole but we this time when we say this is completely brilliant we actually mean it. In this video we get to see what a day in the life of Greg Jackson is like - we get unrivaled access to his Jackson Submission Fighting team base and see the man widely regarded as the best coach in the business go to work. It really is a fantastic watch - we learn a lot about how Jackson only drills three techniques a day with each fighter methodically and enthusiastically as well as his personal fitness regime. What is equally as interesting is the candid shots of Jackson revealing his favourite "coaches" - Lincoln, Shackleton, Washington and Khan - in his words "Come at me Bro"

UFC 133: Evans vs. Ortiz II

The Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia will be the setting for UFC 133 this saturday night. The main event sees Rashad Evans taking on Tito Ortiz. Phil Davis was meant to fight Evans but a knee injury picked up in training meant a replacement had to be found. This will be the second time that Evans and Ortiz have met inside the octagon, the first time being the draw at UFC 73. Ortiz (16-8-1) will be full of confidence going into this one after stopping Ryan Bader inside 2 minutes only a few weeks ago at UFC 132. The full preview video for Evans vs. Ortiz can be viewed here.

Evans (15-1-1) has been impressive since losing against Lyota Machida for the light heavyweight title with wins over Thiago Alves and Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson. He was due to fight champ Jon Jones before injury forced Jones out of the fight. Now with his latest opponent being withdrawn it remains to be seen how this will affect the former champs performance. in the build up to the fight Evans has said that "I'm very anxious to get back in the cage, you know, it's been a long 14 months, a lot of ups and downs inside and outside the cage. I'm looking to get in there and get used to competing again. It's been a long time and I love to compete and being out for 14 months, it was hard for me. I had no idea I was going to be out this long, but things happen and circumstances arise. I'm happy to get back in there, and I'm happy Tito Ortiz took the fight and I got a chance to fight."

Matt Hamill is another late addition to this card as he replaces Vladimir Matyushenko to fight Alexander Gustafsson. Hamill was on a five fight win streak before losing to Rampage which included decision victories over Tito Ortiz and Keith Jardine and a knockout of Mark Munoz. The stretch also included a disqualification win (due to illegal elbow strikes) over now-champ Jon Jones in 2009.

Check out the full fight card here and remember the preliminary fights will be shown live on facebook..
